On No Code the band easily could have rested on their laurels and tried to recreate the sound of those three albums, but instead they made the most daring album of their career, No Code. Ten, Vs., and Vitalogy had enough hits to last Pearl Jam the rest of their career. The album is abrasive and experimental, and despite competition from other 90’s alternative rock radio hitmakers, Tool did not compromise their sound in the name of commercial ambitions with Ænima.įrom 1991 to 1994, Pearl Jam had one of the greatest runs in the history of rock, both artistically and commercially. Ænima is the first Tool album to include Justin Chancellor, and the record sees the band take progressive rock to a whole new level after bands before them like King Crimson. “Dusty” and “Zero Chance” see Soundgarden reach a new level of maturity in their songwriting. “Boot Camp” has some of Chris Cornell’s strongest lyrics, “Switch Opens” is one of Soundgarden’s most triumphant songs sonically, while “Rhinosaur” and “Never The Machine Forever” have two of the bands most memorable guitar riffs. “Pretty Noose” is classic Soundgarden, “Blow Up The Outside” has arguably the band’s most memorable singalong refrain, and “Burden In My Hand” might be the band’s strongest radio hit (especially with how overplayed “Black Hole Sun” has become). At times it can feel disjointed, but it definitely has the band’s most ambitious songs. While the band did return a few years later with more radio hits, they never were able to hit the levels of emotional sincerity they did on Pinkerton again.ĭown on the Upside is by far Soundgarden’s most adventurous album. Pinkerton features Rivers Cuomo analyzing his social anxiety and lack of ability to connect with people, fantasizing about a woman he is too cripplingly shy to approach on “El Scorcho,” describing falling in love with a lesbian on “Pink Triangle,” and contemplating where his carefree life went wrong on “The Good Life.” The album did not do well commercially and led to Weezer going on hiatus for a few years. Weezer broke onto the scene with huge singalong hits in 1994 with their self-titled blue album, but the band went serious with Pinkerton in 1996. “What I Got,” “Wrong Way,” and “Santeria” are still three of the most played songs on alternative radio 20 years later, and the band’s music is so popular that a fake version of the band is still able to fill up amphitheaters. Rage Against The Machine – Evil EmpireĮvil Empire was Rage Against The Machine’s second album, and the band showed no signs of a sophomore slump, releasing classics like “Bulls On Parade” and “People of the Sun.”īradley Nowell tragically died from a heroin overdose before Sublime could release their most famous album, but even without any sort of proper tour or promotion, Sublime has endured as one of the most timeless albums of the 90’s. Marilyn Manson established himself as the king of shock rock with Antichrist Superstar, which features his signature track “The Beautiful People.” Antichrist Superstar signified the shift in hard rock in the late 90’s towards a more stylized approach visually than Grunge bands has presented for much of the decade.ħ. Dust is Screaming Trees’ tightest collection of songs, with arguably the band’s best ballad “Sworn and Broken,” one of their catchiest radio singles “All I Know,” and arguably one of the band’s best tracks “Halo of Ashes.” The band’s debut album was full of self-aware songs with a dry sense of humor, like when Scott Lucas asked if people would like him any better if his name was Eddie Vedder, on the aptly named “Eddie Vedder.”ĭust would wind up being Screaming Trees’ final album released while the band were still together, though the band later released Last Words in 2011, a collection of songs intended for a new album in 2000. Local H had their biggest commercial hit with “Bound For The Floor” in 1996. 1996 was definitely the end of an era, so Alternative Nation has decided to look back at some of the year’s greatest albums 20 years later. Soundgarden released the final album of their original run before breaking up in 1997, Stone Temple Pilots went on hiatus for 2 years following the conclusion of the Tiny Music tour, and Weezer and Tool would not release followup albums to their 1996 releases until the new millenium. Eddie Vedder photo taken by Mick Hutson.ġ996 is widely seen as the last great year of the alternative rock/Grunge 90’s, with many bands from the ‘Grunge’ era going into hibernation shortly therafter. When performing a cognitive assessment, the clinician must take a good patient history and perform a physical exam this ensures that the patients receive a thorough evaluation while strengthening the caregiver-patient relationship. However, it can serve as a helpful resource if there are questions or concerns about a diagnosis or care. While a full neuropsychological evaluation is the most detailed assessment, it is unnecessary for all patients who have a diagnosis or suspicion of cognitive impairment. This comprehensive evaluation can take up to a full day to complete. This exam is noninvasive and involves a battery of assessments performed by a trained professional. A full neuropsychological evaluation would ideally identify the patient’s specific deficits, differentiate between neurological and psychological etiologies, differentiate between Alzheimer’s dementia and other dementias, localize the deficits, and help formulate a personalized management plan. If a screening test is inconclusive or more information is required, a complete neuropsychological evaluation is an option. A cognitive assessment, along with a good history, physical exam, and appropriate labs and imaging, can establish a diagnosis or decide if further evaluation is necessary. Mental status screens are short, efficient, and well-researched modalities designed to evaluate multiple cognitive domains. Most clinicians will use an established mental status screening tool such as the Mini-Mental Status Exam (MMSE) or Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA) to determine if cognitive impairment is present. Available assessment tools range from those designed to evaluate a single neuropsychological domain, to mental status screens that survey multiple neuropsychological domains, to the most extensive test- a complete neuropsychological exam that assesses each neuropsychological domain. Each is carefully constructed to evaluate neuropsychological domains such as memory, language, executive function, abstract reasoning, attention, and visuospatial skills. There are many established tools used to conduct cognitive assessments. This detailed investigation of cognition can diagnose major cognitive impairment (i.e., dementia) and mild cognitive impairment, evaluate traumatic brain injuries, help determine decision-making capacity, and survey intellectual dysfunction. However, when cognitive impairment is suspected, the cognitive assessment can obtain a more detailed analysis by surveying the neuropsychological domains. Psychiatrists often perform cognitive testing during the Mental Status Exam. The cognitive assessment is useful to test for cognitive impairment-a deficiency in knowledge, thought process, or judgment. There are several tools you can use to test if your passwords are strong enough. Set unique and strong passwords, which contain different characters, like uppercase and lowercase letters and numbers, and are more than 15 characters long. Before you do that, make sure you apply these actionable security tips to manage passwords like an expert and make them more secure and unbreakable by cybercriminals. When setting up your encryption process, you’ll be asked to choose a password as your decryption key. Before we jump to these encryption software products available for free, we outline the importance of always using strong and unique passwords for all your online accounts. So which are the encryption tools? We’ve put together this list of free encryption software to choose from. Encryption is essential to protect critical data, no matter if it is stored locally, on the PC, or sent over the Internet. Both Internet users and organizations can do that with the help of free encryption tools which can enhance protection by keeping valuable information hidden from malicious actors. According to “ The 2019 Global Encryption Trends Study” released by the Ponemon Institute, 45% of the organizations surveyed said they have an encryption policy in place to secure the most important data. At the same time, it’s a way that can be used to archive large amounts of data or to secure private communication over the Internet. Encryption helps you secure sensitive information from cyber criminals or other online threats and make access harder to them. The encryption process uses a key and an algorithm to transform the accessible data into an encoded piece of information that can only be deciphered by authorized persons. On a basic level, encryption is one of the best protection methods available to keep all your digital assets safe. Whether it’s personal or work-related, our data is always at risk of falling into the wrong hands, all the more reason to choose the best free encryption software. In this internet-connected world, it’s become more important than ever to keep our information safe. One happy ending to go, please? You deserve the very best and they don’t come better than (view spoiler). You deserve a heroine with gumption.a heroine with sass and a heroine who is not queasy about getting some dirt under her nails. But most of all, I love you for the fact that you finally got a promising start to your lonely love-life. You make me smile, you make me snort with glee and you deliver lines that make me feel that you are indeed my long-lost wee shrimp of a kid brother. Leo Valdez, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. He fights like a true son of the War God and does his battleaxe daddy proud.Īlso, he morphed from an uncertain, shy, cuddly: And no, I am not making some dreadful pun about his shape-shifting abilities. Romantic drama and unnecessary triangles aside, this book was about Hazel morphing into an assured and powerful demigod.įrank Zhang is a beast. YOU GO, DEATH GIRL! I was brimming with pride whenever Hazel took center-stage. And Hecate? I’m not choosing one of your paths. Hazel gets off to a rousing start when she delivers the stellar line No more do we read about the self-accusing, dithering daughter of Hades…sorry, Pluto. In this instalment, Hazel comes into her own. Wonderful, brave, glorious Hazel Levesque. With charmspeak at her disposal and fresh produce in projectile mode, Piper is in good form. She does her bit and her ‘Horn of Plenty’ does it’s job too. Piper is another character who works along the sidelines. There is no reason to not like Jason except perhaps, that he will never be Percy Jackson. And some memorable, tear-jerking help it was. Sure, they had some juicy, meaty adventures but it was all in a day’s work for our celebrity demigods. Rick Riordan made the journey special by NOT giving Annabeth and Percy the limelight. They would face hell, fire and brimstone…raised to the power of infinity and make it seem like a walk down a balmy pier. Riptide would roar and grey cells would work in overtime. Percy would have a quip ready and Annabeth would counter it with a much applied eye-roll. We all knew that the duo would have some sincerely cool moves down in Tartarus. Where do I start? Where DOES the gushing appreciation begin? I took my time, paced out my reading experience and enjoyed every single moment of the trip. I didn’t want to rush through it just to get to the juicy bits and keep pace with the gazillion other fans. So, when the book came out and I finally laid my hands on it, I was in a bit of a melancholic haze. Ol’Seaweed Brain has become someone who I genuinely care about. Apart from The Boy Who Lived, no other teen fictional character has held my emotions in such thrall. Although a rational part of my mind accepted the fact that a humdinger of a cliffhanger was needed to push the series ahead, I felt, for lack of more articulate phrasing…Īnd then began the long, agonizing wait for The House of Hades. When The Mark of Athena ended with Percy and Annabeth plunging into Tartarus, my circuits spontaneously combusted. The world of Percy Jackson is no longer just a hugely popular and infinitely addictive fantasy franchise for me. Just a lovely, battered-with-so-many-many-feelings WOW! The House of Hades takes us through Percy and Annabeth’s adventures in Tartarus and also through the endless battles of brawn and brains that the remaining five demigods go through as they collectively fight against time, nasty monsters, duplicitous gods and the most worrisome factor of all : personal demons. If they succeeded and IF, by some…make that… numerous miracles, Percy and Annabeth survived the very embodiment of hell and reached the Doors of Death on Tartarus’ side, then the seven quest members would simultaneously be able to seal the doors and prevent the giants from seeping through and raising Gaea. It would be Nico’s duty to guide the remaining five half-bloods ( Jason, Piper, Frank, Hazel and Leo) to the mortal side of The Doors of Death. But just before falling, Percy had extracted a promise from Nico, the son of Hades. The Mark of Athena ended with Percy and Annabeth plunging into the dark, insidious and perilous pit of Tartarus. Had they bought the wrong game entirely? No, it said “Ultima” right there on the box!įor the past quarter century, Ultima fans have continued to ask themselves that same question: what the hell happened with Ultima VIII? It stands today as one of the most bizarre would-be series continuations in gaming history, such a colossal failure to meet its players’ expectations that, alone and unaided, it killed dead at a stroke the most venerable franchise in computer gaming. An hour later, they were one and all sitting there scratching their heads and asking themselves what the hell had happened. Tens of thousands of eager Ultima fans, some of whom had been buying every installment of the series for ten years or more, rushed home from their local software stores with Ultima VIII: Pagan in their hot little hands. They made a game in which you played a thoughtless jerk moving on rails through a linear series of events in which you never went to Britannia at all, but stayed instead on a miserable hellhole of a world called Pagan in which you spent the whole game adventuring alone (after all, who would want to adventure with a jerk like you?) in which the core mechanics were jumping between pedestals like Super Mario and pounding your enemies over the head with your big old hammer. Over the course of seven mainline games and five spinoffs and side stories, the Ultima brand had consistently stood for elaborate but doggedly nonlinear plots which seriously engaged with questions of ethics for the familiar but ever-evolving and ever-welcoming world of Britannia in which most of the games took place for a merry group of recurring boon companions with whom the Avatar, the player-defined protagonist of the games, adventured each time for complex rules systems and knotty central mysteries that required brainpower and lots of notepaper rather than reflexes to work through.īut then, for the eighth game in the mainline Ultima series, Origin decided to try something just a little bit different. In Polarr, you get a clarity slider that sharpens mid-tones and generally adds punch to images (easy to overdo) and a very basic sharpening slider with no radius control. Sharpening always strikes me as a bit of a dark art in that whatever method you use, there’ll always be experts out there espousing a better way. Polarr gives you the input and output RGB values while you work. You can place a point in the middle of the curve and pull it up or down, or for shadows and highlights, place a point in the bottom or top corner and pull it along the outer axis. You do this by adjusting any necessary curves so that the histograms roughly align with each other. Used in conjunction with the RGB histograms, you can use RGB curves to remove color casts. In mitigation, it does embed a profile when saving, which some rival products neglect to do. For the web and online photo labs, it’s fine. This might be a constraint of its coding, but it’s less than ideal if you want to print your files on an inkjet. However, theoretically, you must submit to a lower-quality workflow.Ī more limiting aspect of Polarr is that it exports everything in an sRGB color space. This isn’t bad as long as the quality of the JPEG is high and it hasn’t been saved many times before. Like most browser editors I know of, you can’t open hefty 16-bit files in Polarr. You can drag the semi-opaque histogram wherever you want in the frame. In the absence of a clipping display, it’s useful to see what your edits are doing to the image. It shows a colors histogram by default, which you can expand into separate RGB histograms. It’s neater than any other I’ve seen in online editors. You open Polarr, and you want to use it – or at least I did.Ī favorite Polarr feature of mine is its histogram. With filters on the left and most of the tonal and color tools on the right, there are shades of Lightroom about it, but it has a look of its own. It doesn’t try to be Photoshop, and it’s intuitive to use. One of the best things about Polarr is its design. You can use Polarr online in a browser, or you can download it for offline use. They load quickly, but they also tend to be more basic than flash-based equivalents. Modern online editors are written in HTML5 code. Adobe will stop supporting flash in 2020, so anything that runs off it is likely to vanish or wither away. They can be sophisticated, but the days of some of them (namely, flash-based programs) are numbered. Online photo editors work in your browser.
